Letterpress printing was invented in the 1440s by German Johannes Gutenberg. The letterpress printing frame held movable, reusable type, and the press was based on the wine press, with a large threaded screw that could apply pressure to the paper laid underneath the frame, which had been inked from leather covered ink balls.
As technology moved on, the letterpress machine became a little more sophisticated, although movable type continued to be used, so whole pages of type were painstakingly arranged, letter-by-letter, stroke-by-stroke, completely by hand.
Lithographic printing was introduced in 1796 and eventually became the main method of printing until digital printing was introduced in the 20th Century.
Although lithographic printing more or less died out with the advent of digital printing, letterpress has continued and is still used for label-making and printing onto materials such as tubes as it is a stronger, longer lasting print method.
Recently there has been a resurgence of letterpress through craft printing, and customers have turned to letterpress for the crisp, clean results, particularly for such things as business cards and wedding invitations.
