It is a very good thing to make a pop up window asking one question and offering two simple answers ‘yes’ or ‘no’. For example, you want your visitors to try a free demo version of your new product, and you have a question ‘Would You Like to Test Our New Product For Free?’. Of course you can make a single CTA button with the text ‘yes’, ‘try’, ‘try now’, ‘test’, ‘get a trial’, etc. But you can make two buttons (preferably of different colors) with the following text: ‘Yes, I want it’ and ‘No, I don’t want anything for free’. These are just approximate variants, but the sense is clear. In this case you need users to understand that they have a chance now, later there will be nothing free.

Limited choice incites users to act and not hesitate.

Any kind of form is suspicious to users because it asks for personal data. It does not concern contact form pop ups, where users go by their decision. Now, we are talking about the forms offering users to subscribe for a newsletter, get a free ebook or course, get a discount, and so on. There is a chance that 2-step pop ups would works much better. You ask a question within the first pop up (like in the example we mentioned above) and then there are 2 scenarios to proceed. You will open another pop up with an entry form for those who answered positively, and just close the window for users who chose the negative answer.

You need to make your pop up easy to close (without giving any answers) for users who want to come back to the site as quickly as possible, as they are not interested in offers and ads.

Then, the timing is a very big issue you can face – when to make pop up appear, should it appear again after closing? The golden mean is to period a pop up in about 5 seconds after a website opens and if a user closes it, it shouldn’t appear again. Still, if the close was accidental, and the pop up gives exclusive info/discount, make sure it appears frequently enough, say for example every time a user opens the site (or a certain page).
